Pamela Nelson, who grew up in Salina, found a supportive place to study and help the community while attending Wichita State University. She plans to attend graduate school and is considering a career in the hospice field.

What school did you attend before Wichita State?
- Southeast of Saline High School, Gypsum, Kansas
Why did you choose Wichita State University?
Many of my friends were attending Kansas State University, and I wanted something different. Wichita State offered a fresh start and a supportive environment that ended up being the perfect fit for me.
How did scholarships benefit you during your time at WSU?
I initially received a small scholarship through my plate therapy program and later was awarded the Osher Reentry Scholarship. That helped reduce financial stress and allowed me to focus on my academics and applied learning experiences.
What applied learning experiences did you participate in during your time here?
I volunteered with Timeless Care Homes, Cuisine for Healing, and MINDSET MoveWell. Those places gave me hands‑on experience while serving the community.
What advice would you give other Wichita State students?
Take advantage of every resource available. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. The staff truly want to see students succeed.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to attend graduate school in gerontology and hope to pursue a career in the hospice field, though I am still exploring where that path may lead.
What is your go-to dance battle move?
The lawnmower!
