The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has elected Dr. John Tomblin to the grade of Associate Fellow, class of 2027, recognizing his exceptional leadership and global technical excellence in aerospace engineering. Tomblin is executive vice president for research and Industry and Defense Programs at Wichita State University and executive director of the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR).
AIAA Associate Fellow is among the organization’s most prestigious honors, bestowed upon individuals who have made “notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.”

Tomblin’s nomination highlights his 36-year career advancing aerospace research, education, certification, digital engineering, advanced materials, and global industry/government collaboration.
Internationally recognized for integrating deep technical expertise with transformative organizational leadership, Tomblin has significantly shaped the aerospace research ecosystem. He played a foundational role in establishing and expanding the National Center for Advanced Materials Performance, delivering regulator‑accepted composite materials data that accelerated certification pathways and enabled widespread adoption of advanced materials across commercial, military, and general aviation platforms.
Tomblin also pioneered the application of digital twin methodologies to aerospace sustainment, supporting readiness and lifecycle optimization for major aircraft platforms including the F‑16, F/A‑18, B‑1, and UH‑60. These efforts have advanced the practical deployment of digital engineering across U.S. fleets.
Under his leadership, NIAR has grown into one of the world’s leading applied research centers, with a research portfolio that expanded nearly tenfold and partnerships spanning industry, government, and international collaborators. Under his leadership, Wichita State University earned recognition as the No. 1 aerospace research university nationwide in the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development survey.
Tomblin’s career includes significant advances in additive manufacturing qualification, aircraft sustainment, advanced composite structures, and the creation of nationally recognized models for industry‑academia collaboration through Wichita State’s Innovation Campus. His sustained service to the aerospace community includes leadership roles with AIAA technical committees, SAE International, ANSI and numerous national advisory panels.
AIAA’s Associate Fellow honor recognizes individuals who have contributed notably to aerospace and astronautics and who have at least 12 years of professional experience. Candidates must be recommended by at least three associate fellows or fellows and approved by the AIAA Board of Trustees.

Tomblin’s induction will take place during the 2027 AIAA SciTech Forum and Exposition on Jan. 13 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando in Orlando, Florida.
