Human Performance Studies – Piper Award
Purpose: The Department of Human Performance Studies is committed to fostering a culture of
research excellence and professional growth among undergraduate and graduate students.
To support and recognize students' scholarly and academic achievements, the department
offers travel scholarships to those who present original research findings or participates
in a professional capacity at academic or professional conferences.
Amount: Award amounts range from $100 to $500, depending upon the distance to the conference,
the conference type (virtual or in-person), and role at the conference (presenter
or professional capacity). Funding is limited; awards are not guaranteed.
Please read all information below, which includes instructions and expectations.
Eligibility:

- Be in good academic standing in a degree program at the time of the conference.
- Submit proof of registration cost for the conference.
- Submit proof that the presentation was accepted for the conference, or proof of professional
capacity at the conference.
- Students must apply for any qualifying university travel funding (i.e., SGA travel
award, Graduate School travel award, Cohen Honors Enhancement award, other) prior
to requesting a PIPER award and submit proof of funding received.
- Students may receive only one PIPER award of within one academic year (fall through
summer).
Expectations of Student:

- Students must apply for the award PRIOR to the conference. (minimum of 15-days prior
and up to 90-days prior).
- Student must submit proof of other university funding received for this conference.
If the Piper Award is Granted:

- The Piper Award will be deposited to the student’s bank account if they have set
up direct deposit with the University. If not, a check will be issued. If the student
has an outstanding balance with the university, the travel award may apply toward
the outstanding balance.
- Students must provide itemized receipts (hotel, transportation, registration, food,
etc.) to the Human Performance Studies Office Administrator within two weeks of return
from the conference. Students who do not provide receipts will not be reimbursed for
those expenses.
- Students must provide a personalized letter of appreciation to the donor of this
award, Piper, within 30-days of returning from the conference. (e.g., expression of gratitude, impact of the experience, personal academic growth,
professional networking, career motivation, removal of financial barriers, commitment
to pay it forward, etc.). Please submit letter to the Human Performance Studies office administrator to then
be forwarded to Piper.
