WSU Students with the College Bowl trophy

Wichita State University’s Physical Education program had an outstanding showing at this year’s Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (KAHPERD) Convention, held at Fort Hays State University.

The KAHPERD Convention brought together educators and professionals from across the state for two exciting days of professional development, collaboration, and celebration of health, physical education, recreation, and dance in Kansas. With over 100 sessions spanning K-12 Physical Education, Health, Coaching, Adapted PE, and Sport Science, the convention provided attendees with opportunities to learn from state and national experts and gather fresh ideas to take back to their schools and programs.

Olivia Butler, Program Chair, led a group of 22 students to the event, using funds raised through the college’s annual Cornhole Tournament and a sponsorship with Ablah Library to cover student expenses including hotel accommodations, convention registration, and KAHPERD memberships.

The trip was filled with memorable achievements and proud moments for Wichita State. Senior Ian Stevens was named Future Professional of the Year, tying with another student from a different university. This award recognizes his dedication and leadership in the field. “I’m thankful to have been nominated for Future Professional of the Year and even more grateful to have won it! This recognition means a lot to me, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of so many amazing people. Congratulations to all the other nominees and the other winner,” Stevens shared.

Wichita State’s team also took home first place in the College Bowl competition, bringing the trophy back to campus for the second time in three years.

In addition to these individual and team honors, the student organization Team K-12 presented a well-received session titled “Cross-Curriculars for Elementary K-5.” The presentation drew positive feedback from attendees, highlighting the creativity and preparation of Wichita State’s future educators.

The KAHPERD Convention was an invaluable opportunity for Wichita State’s future educators to grow professionally, connect with peers across Kansas, and represent the College of Applied Studies with pride.
