Hands-on Learning Opportunities

As part of the applied learning at Wichita State, the Elliott School provides students with unique opportunities to participate in real-world communication activities. We understand that nothing is more valuable than hands-on experience for growing skills and standing out to employers. We want to help each student in our program discover their passion and be prepared to follow their dreams when they graduate.

Reporting and Feature Writing

Students engage in in-depth reporting to produce a series of articles, which are then offered to the Sunflower, WSU’s student paper. The Fairmount community, adjacent to campus, and Wichita’s aircraft industry are two examples of past work.

Applied Video Production

This ESC class creates real work for companies in the Wichita metro area. Previous clients have included Bike Walk Wichita and various WSU departments.

Shocker Ad Lab

Shocker Ad Lab is Wichita State University's in-house creative advertising agency serving on-campus, innovation-campus and local/regional business clients. Students in Shocker Ad Lab produce relevant, engaging, memorable, unexpected and simple marketing for clients ranging from Airbus Americas to the University Police Department.

IMC Campaigns

Students create communication campaigns for two local nonprofit clients each semester. Students working in teams to identify target audiences, write objectives, design strategies and produce all deliverables, which are then used by the clients.

The Sunflower

WSU’s student-run news source offers paid positions and the perks of the press to reporters, sports writers, opinion writers, editors, designers, photographers and advertising staff. Work at the paper, it’ll be the best bullet on your resume.

Studio B

Students learn reporting, TV-news storytelling and newscast production using state-of-the-art equipment. They connect with local professionals when their work is broadcast.

Live Sports Production

Students produce live sports, assisting in Shocker telecasts, webcasts and video boards at Koch Arena and Eck Stadium. Course alumni are eligible to work Shocker games for pay.
