COMM 130 Syllabus

Dan Close was a reporter and editor at The Wichita Eagle and four other newspapers for 14 years before becoming a full-time Elliott School teacher in 1990. Prior to that he had been a lecturer for four semesters.

At the Eagle, he was an assistant city editor, and a reporter/editor on the state desk and in the feature department. He often covered such beats as police/crime, politics, the military, and water/environmental issues. In writing thousands of stories over the years, Dan has interviewed four presidents, covered a variety of major disasters and written more obituaries than he cares to remember.

He also has been a photographer, done layout and design work, and freelanced for various publications. Dan has won national and regional reporting and writing awards. He also has worked a bit in broadcasting, public relations and advertising.

Dan has taught many sections of Comm 130, 301, 305, 472, 481, 500, 502, 510, 550, 570, 571 and 660 (seminars). In the Fall of 2012, he is teaching an online-only version of Comm 130, Communication & Society. He has been adviser to the student newspaper, the Sunflower, between 1991-2002 and 2009-2016.

His academic interests include alternative American journalism, newsroom coaching techniques, essay writing, desktop publishing and newspaper advising. He is 1st vice president of Kansas Collegiate Media, and a longtime member of the Society of Professional Journalists.

He joined the Kansas Sunshine Coalition as a charter member and is now a board member. He was a part-time adviser in Liberal Arts and Sciences for two years, has served on Faculty Senate and its executive committee, and was on the LAS Curriculum Committee for six years.

Dan has been married since 1988 to the fabulous Laura Kelly. They have two lovely daughters, Meaghan, studying linguistics in graduate school in Texas and Ethiopia; and Martha, studying anthropology at Kansas State University.

The family enjoys traveling, eating and shopping. Dan's hobbies include being a good husband and father, competing in and teaching combat shooting, playing golf, yakking with students, telling jokes, reading offbeat non-fiction, hanging around in coffee shops, occasionally mowing the yard, and frolicking on the banks of the Arkansas River with his black lab, Lumpy.
