Elliott School Faculty Recognition

Honoring Excellence is a top value in the Wichita State University accountability-planning matrix and it can be found aplenty in the halls of Elliott! The Elliott School of Communication recognizes scholarship, teaching and service excellence among its faculty with enthusiastic regularity. Distinguished faculty are at the heart of a rigorous and marketable degree program; they drive the Elliott School's mission and are central to its vision.

We cannot begin to name all the awards, prizes, grants, distinguished posts, etc. that faculty in the ESC have amassed. (See faculty profiles for individual notes of merit.) But we can give you a snapshot of the breadth of accomplishments and the intersection of their many teaching, research and service contributions.

For starters, consider these voluminous faculty highlights from last year alone: 2 books in press; 9 articles published; 19 conference papers presented; 12 videos produced; 3 grants funded totaling well over $1 million; 5 faculty nominated by WSU students for the Board of Trustees excellence in teaching award; and 3 faculty nominated for the Academy for Effective Teaching award.

Next, consider a sampling of professional service posts. ESC faculty are serving or have served as presidents of the following organizations: the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication; Women's Caucus, Central States Communication Association; the Kansas Press Association; the Kansas Sunshine Coalition for Open Government; and the Kansas Speech Communication Association.

Finally, consider these recent awards bestowed on ESC faculty for their scholarly/creative research: National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest, Honorable Mention for Non-Fiction Book — History; Top paper award, National Communication Association, public relations division; Broadcast Educators Association, Educational Award; First place large-market, Kansas Association of Broadcasters award; Sweepstakes award winner, Kansas Better Newspaper Contest; First place, National Newspaper Association contest feature story.

In short, ESC faculty contribute mightily to the distinctiveness and the stature of an integrated school of communication. Faculty regularly showcase a portfolio of teaching, research and service excellence. This is but one way to see the Elliott School of Communication as a vibrant community of successful scholars, teachers, advisers, mentors, consultants and leaders who are "ahead of the curve."
