Graduate CertificateMusic Theory

The graduate certificate in music theory provides students with a credential in music theory through graduate coursework and directed practice in original research in the field. You'll build a portfolio of writing samples that can be submitted for scholarly publication or used in applications for doctoral programs and grants.

This certificate is designed for students who already hold or are currently pursuing a Master of Music, Master of Music Education or Master of Arts in a related field. To enroll, applicants will submit one example of scholarly writing and a statement of purpose describing their interest in music theory and career goals.

Curriculum

Students in this program take courses in guided research and music theory pedagogy, a seminar in music theory, and select electives that support their research interests, culminating in a portfolio of writing samples.
