Bohr and Guerrero Qualify Teams for Pan American Games

WICHITA, Kan. – While some Shockers were attempting to make their national teams a few weeks ago, two former Shockers were representing their national teams and trying to qualify for the Pan American Games at the Pan American Sports Festival in Puebla, Mexico July 15-20. Nathan Bohr (‘99 – ‘03) represented the United States and Clara Guerrero (‘03 – ‘06) represented Colombia.

Bohr, who assisted the Shockers last season as a coach, medaled in every event. The first discipline was doubles, where he teamed with Michael Fagan. Nathan’s 8-game total of 1678 and Michael’s 1663 earned them the silver medal. Normally, Fagan is an opponent when the two bowl PBA events. “Mike is a great player. I was much happier to have him on my team than on an opposing team,” Bohr said.

Nathan had his best block of the tournament, firing 1839 for 8 games (229 average) in the next event. His total, paired with Sarah Lokker’s 1556, earned them a gold medal in the mixed doubles event. “Standing on the podium and hearing the “Star Spangled Banner” was so cool, I made sure to sing!” Bohr added. “The podium was pretty small so only one person could fit. I made sure to step up to the top though, just to feel it, before I stepped down in the front for the anthem.”

Bohr grabbed the silver medal in singles with an 8-game block of 1768, while his teammate Fagan won the gold.

Another silver medal was placed around Bohr’s neck for his all-events score, finishing second by a mere two pins to Fagan. Nathan bowled 5285 for 24 games, an impressive 220 average. By placing in the top 8 in all events, Bohr made the cut for the masters competition. After 8 games of round robin, Nathan was the second seed for the four person bracket. Nathan settled for the bronze medal, bowling 227 to Colombia’s Manuel Otalora’s 234. Michael Fagan went on to win the gold medal.

“My goal going out there was to put together a great first block and get better from there. With that being said, the reward of a medal in every event makes me feel like I accomplished my goal,” Bohr said. “I was a lot more relaxed in this event compared to others. I knew I belonged there. I was also bowling well, so at that point it was about figuring out the conditions and the equipment, then executing. It was a great week; I had a lot of fun.”

Clara Guerrero had a similar tournament, also earning a medal in every event. Clara opened up with a silver medal in the doubles event, bowling 1596 while her teammate Anggie Ramirez added a 1550. In the mixed doubles event, Clara teamed with Manuel Otalora. Guerrero added 1618 to Otalora’s 1723 for the bronze medal.

In the singles event, Clara put together a block of 1608 to earn the silver medal. Her three event totals earned her another silver medal in the all events. She bowled 4822, for a 200 average, over the 24 games.

Like Bohr, she too qualified for the masters competition. Clara also settled for a bronze medal in the event.

At the end of the week, Bohr and Guerrero qualified their teams for the Pan American Games 2015, which are to be held in Toronto, Canada.
