WICHITA, Kan. –For the fourth year in a row, the Shocker men and women swept the first Tier I event of the season, National Team Match Games, in Fairview Heights, Ill. over Thanksgiving weekend.
National Team Match Games featured a unique, Barnhart match play format. Each game (or four-game Baker block) is a match against three other teams in a group of four lanes. 50 bonus points were awarded for each team beaten. Over the course of the weekend, the Lady Shocks won all by two games, earning almost all of the bonus. The men only lost a handful of games but still came out on top.
On Saturday, everyone bowled six team games. The Shockers put on a show, as Wesley Low and Mitch Hupé earned All-Tournament team honors, by finishing second and fourth. Low averaged 231 and Hupé averaged 224 over the six team games. Lady Shocks added two to the All-Tournament Team as well! Junior Sydney Brummett fired her first ever, perfect 300 game during the sixth and final game to win the individual portion of the tournament. Brummett’s final average was 229. Senior Laura Plazas finished right behind her, with a 212 average and earning second.
Sunday consisted of twenty Baker games with the same Barnhart format. The Shocks won almost every game there was to win. By the final round, both teams had all but locked up first place.
“It was a great weekend for our teams,” head coach Gordon Vadakin said. “We played well. With matches every game, it was a great tournament for us to perform well in. There are still some holes that need to be filled, but we are getting better each and every tournament.”
The Shocks get a few weeks off to finish up the first semester and finals. Over break, the Shocker teams will compete in a pair of Tier I tournaments in Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Invitational and the Collegiate Shootout.
