Rafael Aviles is an accounting major whose story demonstrates resilience, growth, and the power of second chances. He chose the Barton School of Business for its strong academic reputation and the opportunity to study close to home with access to exceptional resources. The supportive environment encouraged him to challenge himself and rebuild his academic journey with purpose.

Rafael is a founding member of the Cummings Student Managed Investment Fund and a candidate for President Elect of Beta Alpha Psi. This year, he also joined Edge Academy, where he is learning strategies to stand out in today’s job market. These organizations have given him opportunities to grow professionally, engage with industry leaders, and build skills essential for a successful career.

His most meaningful achievement has been transforming his academic performance. After entering college with a 1.0 GPA and facing academic suspension, Rafael returned with renewed focus. He rebuilt his study habits, discipline, and drive, raising his GPA above a 3.0 and proving to himself that perseverance can reshape a future. That turnaround is one of the accomplishments he is proudest of.

Rafael’s inspiration comes from an English instructor, Hannah Hornung, who encouraged him to appreciate every opportunity and to persevere despite challenges. Her strength and passion for teaching left a lasting impact, helping him shift the way he views education and opportunity.

Outside of academics, Rafael enjoys sharing his culture with others. A fun fact about him is that his family’s restaurant, Tequila’s LLC in Valley Center, was featured on KAKE News, where he appeared in a televised segment. The experience remains a meaningful reminder of his roots and the pride he has in his family’s work.

After graduation, Rafael hopes to pursue a fulfilling career in accounting and eventually build his own firm or business. He also plans to stay connected to the Barton School as an engaged alumnus, giving back to the community that helped shape his future.

Being selected as one of Barton’s 25 Under 25 represents the journey Rafael has traveled and the hard work he has put into becoming the student and leader he is today. His story is a powerful reminder that resilience and determination can turn setbacks into success.
