Cat Powner is an accounting major whose journey at the Barton School of Business reflects determination, growth, and gratitude. She chose Wichita State University for its strong job placement record, supportive faculty, and the unmatched opportunities that Woolsey Hall provides. The Barton School’s culture encouraged her to seek out new challenges, build meaningful relationships, and pursue excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

Cat has been involved in Beta Alpha Psi and The National Society of Leadership and Success, organizations that have shaped her leadership skills and strengthened her professional focus. However, one of the most influential moments in her college journey occurred at the very first business job fair she attended. Unsure of what to expect, Cat walked in hoping simply to gain insight. Instead, she secured two job offers. One of those roles became the position she has held for more than a year, and she recently accepted a full-time offer with that same company. That experience became a defining moment, showing her that Barton students are highly sought after and that her hard work had real value.

Cat has been inspired by the exceptional mentors she met at Textron Aviation. They encouraged her to perform at her best while also reminding her that academics are a priority. Her managers modeled professionalism, compassion, and balance, helping her learn what it means to be both a strong employee and a committed student.

Her passion for accounting stems from a love of math and problem-solving. She appreciates that accounting offers clarity, structure, and purpose, and she enjoys the challenge of interpreting information that helps organizations operate effectively. Cat also values the stability and long-term potential of the field, viewing it as a profession that will always be essential.

A fun fact about Cat is that she holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. Her multicultural background contributes to her adaptability and openness to new experiences.

Being named one of Barton’s 25 Under 25 represents the hard work, commitment, and growth Cat has demonstrated throughout her college journey. She is proud to represent the Barton School and looks forward to building a future grounded in purpose, skill, and passion.
