Overview
Katelyn Peterson is a teaching assistant and doctoral candidate in Choral Conducting and Pedagogy at the University of Iowa. She has conducted the Voxman Chorale and the Camerata Singers and has declared secondary emphases in Music Education and Voice Performance. In addition, she is the Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Iowa City, IA. Before her studies at UI, Peterson received her MM in Choral Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2022, where she studied conducting with Dr. Zachary Durlam and conducted the UWM entry-level treble clef choir, Alta Voce, as well as opera choruses. Peterson earned her Bachelor of Music Education with an emphasis in Choral and General Music from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 2011, where she studied conducting with Dr. Jon-Wong Park and Dr. Kristin Tjornehoj.
As a K-12 educator, Peterson has taught in Wisconsin, teaching in the Milwaukee Public School District (2021-2022), the River Falls School District (2016-2020 ), and the New Richmond School District (2011-2016). Her current research focuses on implementing culturally appreciative pedagogy in collegiate choral rehearsals and the evolution of the choral spiritual. An avid theater fan, Peterson has directed numerous plays and musicals for middle and high school students.
