Jazz piano
John Goering has taught at Wichita State University since 2005, where he currently teaches jazz piano, jazz history, world music, and online classes. He also maintains an active private piano studio offering instruction in jazz, classical, Latin, sacred, and contemporary styles, as well as improvisation, theory, composition, and arranging.
A seasoned performer throughout the Midwest, Goering appears regularly as both leader and sideman. He leads the John Goering Jazz Trio and performs with Donna Tucker, Fields of Jazz, and the Cubana Bop Latin Jazz Ensemble. He also serves as musical director, conductor, and arranger for the Wichita State Latin Jazz Ensemble. His performance portfolio spans ensemble work, solo projects, and collaborations across jazz and Latin genres.
Goering earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music performance from Wichita State. Before returning to Wichita, he was active in Denver, performing with Mistura Fina, Conjunto Colores, and the Denver Civic Theater, and serving on the music faculty at the University of Colorado Denver. His mentors include Eric Gunnison, Chucho Valdés, Rebecca Mauleón, Andrew Trechak, Robert Spillman, Michael Spiro, Ed Soph, J.C. Combs, and Matt Wilson.
Goering’s teaching philosophy emphasizes strong technical foundation, expressive artistry, stylistic versatility, and disciplined practice. Whether working with beginning or advanced students, he focuses on helping each student grow as a complete musician—with confidence, creativity, and a deep love for the piano.
