Jazz Trumpet
Nate Nall is a Kansas City–based trumpeter, educator, and composer. An active performer across the United States, as well as in Europe and Mexico, Nall is a proud contributor to Kansas City’s rich jazz tradition. He performs in a wide range of genres, appearing regularly with small jazz groups, big bands, horn sections, musical theater productions, symphony pops programs, and church ensembles.
In 2016, Nall earned second place in the National Trumpet Competition Jazz Division, and in 2014, he was selected for Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program, performing his original music at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He has appeared at Kansas City’s leading venues, including the Blue Room at the American Jazz Museum and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
As leader of the Nate Nall Quintet, he performs original works and arrangements and has released two albums: Thank God for the Little Things (2020) and Places to Go (2017). Nall has performed with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra alongside Deborah Brown, Kirk Whalum, and the New York Voices, and has shared the stage with his mentor, Bobby Watson. He has also appeared on the nationally syndicated radio program 12th Street Jump and performed as a featured soloist with the Marcus Lewis Big Band at the Jazz Education Network Conference.
Additional collaborations include performances with The Temptations, Michael Feinstein, Jerry Bergonzi, Jon Faddis, and the Fountain City Brass Band.
An educator passionate about helping students discover their musical voices, Nall has taught private lessons in Kansas City since 2011. He currently serves as adjunct jazz trumpet professor at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory, MidAmerica Nazarene University, and Wichita State University, where he also teaches improvisation and directs jazz ensembles.
Nall holds a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.
