TRIO History & Impact
A Legacy of Access and Opportunity
TRIO programs were created as part of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds have equal access to higher education. For over 50 years, TRIO has helped millions of students overcome academic, financial, and social barriers to earn college degrees.
- More than 800,000 students are served by TRIO programs each year across the U.S.
- TRIO students are twice as likely to stay in college compared to peers without similar support.
- TRIO alumni include scientists, engineers, educators, and leaders making an impact worldwide.
At Wichita State University, TRIO continues this tradition by empowering students to achieve their academic and professional goals through Student Support Services STEM.
