7.05 / Employment in University Support Staff Positions

  1. Policy

    1. Probationary Appointment

Each newly hired employee is subject to a probationary period of six months. This probationary period can be extended by the supervisor for up to six additional months if action to extend the probationary period is taken prior to the end of the original six-month probationary period.

Employees in trainee positions cannot achieve permanent status until the position has been reclassified into the regular classification. Therefore, there is no probationary period for trainee positions. An employee will remain in "trainee" status a minimum of six months and a maximum of two years. In order to be reclassified to the regular classification, the employee must meet the requirements designated for the regular classification within the six-month to two-year trainee time frame.

    2. Promotions

Promotions will be subject to a probationary period of not less than three months, nor more than six months. However, a probationary period of up to 12 months may be established when specific training or certifications requirements for a position cannot be completed within six months. See Section 7.06 for promotion details.

    3. Lateral Transfer

In a lateral transfer an employee moves from one position to another position at the same level. Lateral transfers of university support staff where no salary advantage is realized are not considered promotions. A permanent employee who transfers to another position at WSU will not be required to serve another probationary period.
