A solar eclipse takes place when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, covering the sun's disc completely. The Wichita area is about 500 miles northwest of the center of the eclipse path so from here the sun's disc will only become about 85 percent covered by the moon

In 1976, the Dwane and Velma Wallace Endowment, which supports scholarships for engineering students and provides funds for the WSU College of Engineering, was created.
