Flight Structures Lab
Located in the John Bardo Center (Room 143)
The Flight Structures Lab provides for advanced structural testing of materials, components, and prototypes. Students get hands-on experience conducting tests using top-notch equipment, instruments and methods. This lab is used for curricular instruction, to support undergraduate senior design projects, undergraduate and graduate research, and for funded research.

Test Equipment and accessories
- MTS Electromechanical Testing machines (5 kip, 22 kip and 55 kip capacity) with Testsuite control and data acquisition software
- MTS Low-velocity drop tower
- Custom built low capacity torsion testing apparatus
- Whiffle tree apparatus for distributed loading
- Load cells ( 1.1 lbs, 11 lbs, 50 lbs, 100 lbs, 250 lbs, 500 lbs, 1000 lbs)
- Strain gage signal conditioners : Vishay 2210
- Load cell signal conditioners : Interface Model 9840 Digital Process Monitor (x2)
- GOM Aramis 5M photogrammetry system (shared with NIAR AVET labs)
- CSM Pin-on-disk Tribometer
- Split-Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus
- Picoscope Oscilloscope
- LVDT's
Test Fixtures
- Mechanical wedge grips (5 kip and 50 kip capacity)
- Pneumatic grips (50 lb capactity)
- Compression platens (Ø 2in , Ø 6in)
- Compression test fixtures (ASTM D695, ASTM D6641)
- Shear test fixtures (picture frame - 9inx 9in, 4in x 4in, ASTM D5379, ASTM D7078)
- 3-pt and 4-point bending test fixtures
- Mode-I interlaminar fracture toughness ( ASTM D5528)
- Mode-II interlaminar fractue toughness (ASTM D7905)
- Mixed-mode interlaminar fracture toughness (ASTM D6671)
- Clevises for Overheight Compact Tension (OCT) and Overheight Compact Compression (OCC) testing of laminated composites
- In-plane tension test fixtures for honeycomb core sheets
