General Education Program at WSU
Effective Fall 2024, WSU follows the KBOR system-wide General Education (GE) program
framework which is comprised of 34-35 credit hours organized in six discipline-based
"buckets" and an institutionally designed bucket. A student who satisfies all seven
buckets will complete the GE program.
The 34-35 credit hours are divided as follows:
English Discipline Area – Bucket 1:
Six hours. See specific requirements below.
Communications Discipline Area – Bucket 2:
One listed course.
Mathematics & Statistics Discipline Area – Bucket 3:
One listed course.
Natural & Physical Science Discipline Area – Bucket 4:
Four to five hours from one subject and must include a lab. Choose one of the listed
courses or course combinations.
Social & Behavioral Sciences Discipline Area – Bucket 5:
Six hours from at least two subject areas listed.
Arts & Humanities Discipline Area – Bucket 6:
Six hours from at least two subject areas listed.
Institutionally Designated Area – Bucket 7:
Students must complete six credit hours of additional general education courses in
Bucket 7. These credit hours will include three credit hours of First-Year Seminar
and three credit hours of general education of the student's choice from the approved
list of Bucket 4-7 general education courses.
Those students who have earned an Associate Degree or 30 credit hours prior to high
school graduation and before starting classes at WSU as a degree-bound student, may
be exempt from taking a First-Year Seminar course.
