Ashley Purdum, an associate clinical professor at Wichita State University, works as an acute care speech-language pathologist (SLP) at Wesley Medical Center. WSU student teachers use video, music to help other teachers during pandemic  

 In stepped Wichita State University student teachers with videos, clarinets, John Lennon, baseball, soccer, Greek gods and Abraham Lincoln. The COVID-19 pandemic took them out of the classroom. It did not stop their contributions to education. “Instead of doing lesson plans to send to me, we try to help actual teachers and actual kids,” said Dr. Aaron Rife, associate professor in the College of Applied Studies. Engineering dean gets creative with his LEGO city

 In pictures it looks like a real city in still-life.  Inside a street-side sushi bar, residents enjoy California rolls while off-duty staff scarf down hot dogs in the alley just outside.

A small girl scowls at the concrete, staring at the melting ice cream she just dropped from her empty cone.

In reality, it’s a 75-square-foot custom LEGO city on a table. 

Dennis Livesay, dean of the College of Engineering, has constructed the city in his basement during the last six years. Most of it is his own creation. Read More.

Tech updates keep Shocker Studios on cutting edge for applied learning

 The stream of updates at Shocker Studios are mostly high-tech. Some of the most important to the mission are not – paper pinned to a wall.

In between is the mission of Shocker Studios, home to Wichita State University’s School of Digital Arts and the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Media Arts.

“Everything is constantly evolving,” said Justin Rorabaugh, School of Digital Arts director. “It’s important for us, for the student’s sake and for our sake, to stay as much in front of that as we can.” Read more.

  Honors astronomy faculty makes an expanding universe feel a little smaller

 “You want the Moon? Just say the word, and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down.”


That’s a classic quote spoken by Jimmy Stewart’s character, George Bailey, in the 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life.

One Wichita State professor does it for students every week. Martin Ratcliffe, adjunct professor in the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College, teaches students that space and the people who study it aren’t all that far away. Read More.

  Music professor invents the Gapper, a device to aid in playing the trumpet

  Wichita State Assistant Professor of Trumpet David Hunsicker has played the trumpet for more than 35 years. He has performed with orchestral ensembles, jazz bands and in musicals, and has taught aspiring musicians at Wichita State University since 2013.   2019 faculty award winner Rick Pappas reflects on 43 years of PE teaching

 

As a freshman gymnast at Kansas State University in 1971, Rick Pappas performed for thousands of people at a time, but one small exhibition at an elementary school changed his career.

Rick was one of 10 performers in the show. The kids took to him right away, and their cheers grew louder every time his coach would introduce him to the stage. “‘Third time, Rick’s coming up! Here comes Rick!’ And I would do a trick,” Rick said.  The kids went wild.
