August 27, 2025

Congratulations to those who received awards in July 2025, and especially to Dr. Raj Logan and “WSU Team Microscopy” for a new NSF-MRI award!  WSU will acquire a Super-resolution Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope that will enhance life sciences research in south-central Kansas. With this new equipment, WSU researchers will be able to advance their research programs in areas such as Cell and Developmental Biology, Endocrinology, Ecological Physiology, Mechanobiology, Molecular/Cellular Biochemistry, and Neural Bioengineering. Access to the equipment is expected to significantly impact the academic experience of WSU students by providing them with the opportunity to learn state-of-the art microscopy techniques for their research.  Please join us in congratulating PI Dr. Raj Logan, and Drs. William Hendry, Li Yao, Moriah Beck and David Long on this incredible achievement!

So far in FY2026, WSU researchers under Academic Affairs have submitted external proposals in the amount of $6,069,241 and received $1,265,159 in external awards.

WSU leadership continues to carefully monitor the impact of any executive orders on our research programs.  If you receive any communication from a federal sponsor, please continue to forward that information to your respective office of research.  And as always, if you have questions about the content of this newsletter, please contact us at research@wichita.edu

SSTI: Examining the Geographic Concentration of VC Investment in AI

“The dominance of artificial intelligence (AI) investments in venture capital (VC) has been a consistent storyline in the first half of 2025. PitchBook, Carta, Crunchbase, and many others have all pointed to the significant portion of investment dollars and deals flowing to AI companies. With the volume of companies, deals, and dollars involved, it is more than a spike in the usual cyclic nature of VC investment.  As SSTI wrote in our review of Q1 venture capital investment activity, VC has been concentrating in larger deals. With market trends and mega deals in AI so well documented, we explore investment concentration from deal size and geographic perspectives.”
