Full-time Academic English Requirement for Graduate Students

Half-time Academic/Intensive English Study for Graduate Students

  • Conditional Admission is available for students who meet our academic requirements for admission. If you receive conditional admission the major listed on your I-20 will be Intensive English. We will note that you also have admission to an academic program on your I-20.
  • You do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score when you apply.
  • You may send your official score later or we will test your English after you arrive.
  • Students who do not meet our English requirement or do not submit an English score will be required to enroll in the Intensive English Language Center.

Send Official Results

  • Tests must have been taken within the last two years.
  • When applying for admission, students should upload their test scores with their transcripts and other application materials. If a copy is uploaded with application materials, the scores will be verified with ETS or IELTS.
  • TOEFL scores can be sent from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Official copies are not required as long as the student copy can be verified.
  • IELTS Academic scores can be sent from an IELTS Testing Center. WSU does not accept IELTS General Training results. Below is the exact information to provide to your test center in order to request your scores be sent to Wichita State University electronically. Your results will not be mailed by post.

  • Duolingo certified results can be sent from Duolingo English Test. 
  • SAT results must be sent directly from the College Board. Our institution code is 6884.
  • ACT results must be sent directly from ACT. Our institution code is 1472.
  • Official PTE Academic scores must be sent to Wichita State University directly from Pearsons.
  • Students who have studied at ELS Language Center or at another U.S. college or
    university must have their official transcripts sent directly to Wichita State University by mail.

English Proficiency Examination (EPE)

  • Required for students who have not met our English requirement by the time they come to Wichita
  • Administered by Wichita State University
  • Cost is US$75.

Intensive English Language Center (IELC)

  • Enrollment in Intensive English is required for students who have not met our English requirement.
  • Students with undergraduate admission or graduate admission may enroll in both Intensive English and academic classes if:

    a) Student places in one of the two highest levels of the Intensive English Langauge Program.
    OR
    b) Student has an eligible half-time academic score:
    • TOEFL (iBT) score of 61 to 71
    • IELTS overall band score of 5.5
    • PTE Academic score of 40 to 48
    • Duolingo English Test score of 95 to 104
    • WSU English Proficiency Examination (EPE) result of 75 to 79
