Undergraduate English Requirement

English Requirement for Graduate Students

  • Conditional Admission is available for students who meet our academic requirements for admission. If accepted for conditional admission, the major listed on your I-20 will be Intensive English but we will notate that you also have admission to an academic program.
  • You do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score when you apply.
  • You may send your official score later or we will test your English after you arrive.
  • Students who do not meet our English requirement will be required to enroll in the Intensive English Language Center.

Send Official Results

  • When applying for admission, students should upload their test scores with their transcripts and other application materials. If a copy is uploaded with application materials, the scores will be verified with ETS or IELTS and an official copy is not required.
  • TOEFL scores can be sent from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Official copies are not required as long as the student copy can be verified.
  • IELTS Academic scores can be sent from an IELTS Testing Center. WSU does not accept IELTS General Training results. Official copies are not required as long as the student copy can be verified.
  • SAT results must be sent directly from the College Board. Our institution code is 6884.
  • ACT results must be sent directly from ACT. Our institution code is 1472.
  • Official PTE Academic scores must be sent to Wichita State University directly from Pearsons.
  • Students who have studied at ELS Language Center or at another U.S. college or
    university must have their official transcripts sent directly to Wichita State University.

English Proficiency Examination (EPE)

  • Required for students who have not met our English requirement by the time they arrive in Wichita
  • Administered by Wichita State University
  • Cost is US$75.

Intensive English Language Center (IELC)

  • Enrollment in Intensive English is required for students who have not met our English requirement.
  • Students with undergraduate admission may enroll in both Intensive English and undergraduate classes with one of the following scores:
    1) An internet-based TOEFL (iBT) score of 61 to 71
    2) A paper-based TOEFL (PBT) score of 500 to 529
    3) An English Proficiency Examination result of 75 to 79
    NOTE: Students who take the IELTS must obtain a score of 6.0 or higher in order to take any undergraduate classes. There is no part-time option for this test.
