Tour de Shox: Stop Four

Quad Cities: The Shocker Bowling teams head to Davenport, Iowa and Moline, Ill. for the Leatherneck Classic.

Location: Miller Time Bowl will host the men’s team this year in Davenport. The ladies will bowl across the border at Highland Park Bowl in Moline, Ill.

Leatherneck History: Last season, the Shocker men finished third while the ladies finished fifth. In 2013, Wichita State did not attend the event.

Schedule: 8:30 a.m. on Saturday is the start time for the women at Highland Park Bowl. The men begin at 9:00 a.m.; everyone bowls six traditional team games. Sunday morning all teams return for 16 baker games beginning at 8:00 a.m. for the ladies and 8:30 a.m. for the gentlemen. After qualifying, the top eight varsity teams will be seeded into a best two-of-three, single-elimination baker bracket. Bracket play begins at 11:45 a.m. for the women and 12:15 p.m. for the men.

How to keep up: Follow the Shockers scores on their Facebook (/shockerbowling) and Twitter (@shockerbowling) for periodic score updates when they are available! Results will be posted at the end of the each day on Facebook (/leatherneckclassic) and on their website (www.leatherneckclassic.com).

Travelers: This is the first trip with only two teams traveling! Sydney Brummett, Estefania Cobo, Ashlyn Herzberg, Hollyann Johansen, Sierra Kanemoto, Dasha Kovalova and Caitlin Tam will travel for the women. On the men’s side, AJ Chapman, Stephen Cowland, Tyler Cruz, Packy Hanrahan, Mitch Hupé, Wesley Low, Zach Rhoades and Justin Zwaschka are traveling for the men. This marks Zwaschka’s return to competition since having a successful right knee, meniscus repair.

Escaping the Cold: Junior Kristie López is escaping the chilly weather in Wichita and heading to Las Vegas, Nev. to represent Puerto Rico in the Qubica/AMF World Cup Nov. 13-20. Former Shockers Sandra Gongora (’06-’10) and Clara Guererro (’03-’06) are also attending, representing Mexico and Colombia, respectively. Soon-to-be Shocker Kamron Doyle, who will join the Shox next fall, will be representing the United States. Laura Plazas will return to Wichita over the weekend with quite a few medals from the Colombian National Games!

Shocker Speak: Senior Tyler Cruz and Sophomore Sydney Brummett
With only two practices this week, how did you make sure you were prepared for the tournament this weekend?
TC: We focused on hitting different targets with different releases to sharpen our tools. We spent some time doing head to head matches, both individually and as a baker team.
SB: We made sure our focus was really high during practice this week. Many of us too some time to get an extra practice or two in as well.
How do you manage missing class and traveling while keeping good grades?
TC: We try to be ahead throughout the whole semester so when we travel we aren't falling behind, just into the right place. Sometimes I’ll bring homework on the bus or do it in the hotel room to stay ahead of class as well.
SB: Creating a great relationship with your professor is key. They may allow you to turn something in before you leave or after you return, you can get notes from them and ask them questions about the material you missed.
