Patricia Self
Communication Sciences and Disorders
Dr. Trisha Self has had a remarkable career at Wichita State University, excelling as an extraordinary teacher and a highly-focused researcher. She has also provided exceptional service to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), the university, and numerous local, regional, and national organizations. It was my extreme pleasure to work alongside Dr. Self for most of her career and to witness her dedication and energy firsthand.
Dr. Self began her journey at WSU as the Director of the WSU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. Under her leadership, the clinic was relocated to its current home at the Hughes Metroplex, and she played a pivotal role in expanding and strengthening many of the programs that now thrive as part of the clinic.
Upon transitioning to a faculty role, Dr. Self further developed her skills as an educator and researcher. She has received numerous awards recognizing her excellence in teaching. Her ability to inspire students—both in the classroom and in clinical settings—is truly outstanding. Through experiential learning projects and hands-on activities, she motivates students to achieve their full potential.
As a researcher, Dr. Self has focused on serving children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. She has partnered with local agencies and physicians to improve early identification of children with ASD and has developed innovative treatment models to support their transition into school settings. More recently, she has expanded her efforts to support college students on the spectrum and raise awareness about neurodiversity on campus. Additionally, she has taken significant steps to create opportunities and supports for adults on the spectrum, a population that is often underserved.
Recognized nationally as a leader in her field, Dr. Self is frequently invited to contribute to educational and clinical initiatives. She has also provided critical leadership within the department, particularly in the areas of curriculum development and revision for the CSD program.
Throughout her time at Wichita State, Dr. Self has remained highly productive and deeply committed to her work—all while maintaining her wonderful sense of humor. She is an outstanding colleague, and I am honored to celebrate her many contributions to our university and community.
