Rebecca Nordyke
Elliott School of Communication
Becky Nordyke's remarkable career at Wichita State University spans more than 40 years. Throughout this time, she has served in a variety of roles, including teaching, working with the Interdisciplinary Communication Research Institute, and acting as the Assistant Director of the Public Speaking Program.
One constant throughout her career has been her excellence in teaching. Becky consistently teaches the widest variety of classes in the department—ranging from general education courses to those in the communication core and strategic communication emphasis area.
She is a recognized leader in curriculum innovation. An early participant in the Online Faculty Fellows Program, Becky developed specialized public speaking curriculum for non-native English speakers. She was one of only two faculty members to create and teach a first-year seminar, which focused on cross-cultural communication. She also encouraged community engagement through creative class projects, including the Quilts of Valor initiative. Her dedication to experiential learning has consistently enriched her students’ education.
Becky's excellence in the classroom is well-documented. She was an inaugural recipient of promotion to Senior Educator. Her students frequently commend her teaching, describing her as “concerned about every student,” “helpful, understanding, and kind,” and someone who “wants to bring out the best in us.” Student feedback routinely notes there is “nothing” she could do to improve her courses.
Over her distinguished career, Becky has taught thousands of students at Wichita State, serving in both full-time and part-time, temporary and permanent roles. Her commitment to the Elliott School of Communication, her students, and the communication discipline is unwavering.
We are deeply fortunate to have Becky as part of our faculty. Her impact over the past four decades has been profound and enduring.
