Reverse Transfer Project

What is Reverse Transfer?

Students who transfer to Wichita State University from a Kansas public community college or technical college may be eligible to participate in the Reverse Transfer Project. The Reverse Transfer Project allows students to receive an associate degree from a community college or technical school previously attended by combining the credits earned there and the credits earned after transferring to WSU. Students will be notified of their eligibility and invited to participate during their first semester at WSU or the first semester they become eligible. Eligible students will continue to receive an invitation to participate each fall and spring semester until they choose to opt in or opt out of the project.

Why Participate in Reverse Transfer?

Not all students earn their associate degree before transferring from a community college or technical school. The associate degree represents an educational achievement, a credential for career advancement, and a building block to additional academic accomplishments. Further, research shows that students who earn the associate degree via reverse transfer are more likely to continue their education and complete a bachelor’s degree. This project provides students with the opportunity to earn that credential using courses completed as part of their Wichita State University bachelor's curriculum.

How is Eligibility Determined?

Eligibility is determined by the number of transfer credits earned at the community college or technical college. To be eligible, a student must be currently enrolled, pursuing a bachelor’s degree at WSU, and have earned a minimum of 15 credit hours at one Kansas community college or technical college.

Reverse Transfer Process

  1. Eligible students will receive an email at their shockers.wichita.edu email address directing them to a link in the myWSU portal. This link allows students to opt in or opt out of the project. Students only need to opt in once. Participation in the project will continue until the student opts out or earns the associate degree.
  2. WSU will begin sending a transcript for students participating in the project to the community college or technical college for which they have consented once the student reaches 60 total earned credit hours. Transcripts are sent after each fall and spring semester until the student earns the associate degree, opts out of the project, or stops attending WSU. The transcript is sent at no cost to the student.
  3. The Registrar's Office at the community college or technical school will evaluate the WSU transcript for completion of the requirements for an associate degree. The Registrar's Office at the community college or technical school will inform WSU's Registrar Office once they have awarded the degree.
  4. If awarded, the community college or technical school will send WSU a copy of the student's transcript showing the earned associate degree. The community college or technical college will inform students how they will receive their diploma.
