Student Steering Committee

The Shocktoberfest Student Steering Committee is comprised of students and staff who plan and execute Wichita State's largest tradition of Shocker Pride! The committee works collaboratively with Student Engagement & Belonging, WSU Foundation & Alumni Engagement, Shocker Athletics, University Departments, and Student Organizations to create memorable experiences that extend to Shockers near and far.

Shocktoberfest Student Committee

The student committee features many positions that guide the planning and development of Shocktoberfest events and share the knowledge with the campus community on how they can be involved in this long-standing tradition.

Committee Qualifications

  • 2.75 Cumulative GPA
  • Minimum completion of 12 credit hours at Wichita State University
  • Must be able to attend weekly meetings, Monday's at 3 p.m.
  • Able to serve one year beginning, February through November
  • Summer meetings are held virtually and are set by the chaiperson and/or advisor as needed
  • Completed application with completed Short Essay Response Questions

Position Descriptions

Shocktoberfest Student Committee Chairperson

The role of the Shocktoberfest Student Committee Chairperson is to guide the committee in the successful planning and execution of Shocktoberfest's student-centered programs and initiatives. 

  • Maintains a mission focused approach around promoting Shocker Pride and enhancing School Spirit
  • Facilitates goal setting and develops actionable steps to facilitate goal accomplishment
  • Guides committee in the creation of a well rounded schedule of Shocktoberfest events
  • Holds team members accountable for the responsibilities of their individual position
  • Leads weekly committee meeting
  • Develops a training schedule to prepare team members to successfully execute their roles
  • Facilitates the selection process for the Shocktoberfest Student Steering Committee
  • Serves on the overall Shocktoberfest Steering Committee
Competitions Coordinator

The role of the Competitions Coordinator is to promote participation in Shocktoberfest activities to campus partners including faculty/staff, residence halls, and student organizations. This position

  • Plans and/or coordinates athletic competitions like Pickleball, Dodgeball or similar
  • Works collaboratively with departments and/or student groups to coordinate a service centered campus wide initiative like Can Wars, Clothing Drive, or similar
  • Works collaborative with Housing to host competitions built on community in the residence halls
  • Coordinates faculty/staff centered activities like the Department Door Decorating Competition
  • Oversees the student group Spirit Competition and hosts activities that encourage student group participation like Window Decorating, Parade Participation, and attendance at athletic centered activities
Royalty Coordinator

It is the role of the Royalty Coordinator to coordinate, plan, organize, and follow through on all details relating to the selection and coronation of Shocktoberfest Royalty

  • Sends invitations to qualified students 
  • Facilitates voting and selections process
  • Coordinates the awards ceremony
  • Coordinates with court on all scheduled appearances during Shocktoberfest
Events Coordinator

It is the role of the Events Coordinator to coordinate, plan, organize, and follow through with special activities as determined by the committee. Events may include

  • Shocktoberfest Kick-Off
  • Wu's Birthday Bash
  • Headlining musical act at Shocker Madness
  • Coordinate with campus departments on events hosted during the week such as faculty/staff events, service, and more.
Marketing & Outreach Coordinator

It is the role of the Marketing & Outreach Coordinator to coordinate, plan, and execute a successful campaign that promotes Shocktoberfest event, activities, and involvement experiences to the campus community.

  • Coordinates a campus wide campaign that promotes the overall Shocktoberfest experience and individual events
  • Works with Strategic Communications to coordinate marketing requests
  • Hosts outreach initiatives to promote individual and group involvement in the Spirit Competition and individual competitions
  • Works with the committee to distribute marketing materials
  • Create press release for the announcement of winners for competitions and Shocker Royalty

  • Interviews (Virtual) | Wednesday, December 17 and/or Thursday, December 18
  • Retreat | Saturday, January 31, 2026
  • Weekly Committee Meetings | Begin in February | Monday's at 3 p.m.
  • Term of Position | February through November
