Shocktoberfest Spirit Competition

Departments are encouraged to show their Shocker Pride and celebrate Shocktoberfest. The winning department will receive $100 towards an office party. 

Who can compete | WSU Departments

General Information

1. Any WSU department may compete by decorating a doorway, wall, or entryway on to promote both Shocktoberfest and school spirit.
2. This years theme is "Building on Tradition". Departments will utilize the theme to emphasize Shocker Pride. 
3. Decorations must include Shocktoberfest 2026
4. Judging will take place the week of Shocktoberfest and you will be notified in at least 24 hours in advanced of the judging committee’s arrival.
5. The office of the winning door will receive an office party valued at $100 to be arranged at a later date.
6. Individual award recipients will receive a $50 Shocker Store Gift Card.

Rules

1. Department Door decorations must be finished by Friday, September 25 at 5 p.m. and remain on display through Monday, Oct. 5.
2. Use materials that will not damage doors and/or walls. Painters tape is recommended. Use caution when using/removing command strips.
3. The door used must remain fully operational with decoration.
4. All materials should be flame resistant.
5. Trees and greenery must be artificial and flame resistant.
6. Any lights used must by UL - approved and low wattage.
7. Fire alarm pull stations, fire extinguisher cabinets, smoke detectors, and exit signs must not be covered and exits must not be blocked.
8. No cords for electricity or other purposes are allowed under doors or across/in hallways.

Requirements

1. The decoration should celebrate Wichita State Shocker Pride and may incorporate the theme “Building on Tradition”
2. Shocktoberfest 2026 must appear somewhere on the decoration.

Who can compete | Student Organizations, Student Groups, Departments

Rules

1. All items must be brought with groups when they check in.
2. Cans must be unopened and unexpired. Packaging may not be tampered with to preserve the food.
3. No more than 4 people are allowed to work on the structure at one time, and they must be pre-registered. 
4. Group members may tag in/out, but all participants must be pre-registered.
5. Participants may begin checking in at 3:00 p.m. But may not begin working on their structures until 3:20 p.m. All participants must conclude by 5:00 p.m.
6. In assembling their structures groups may use cardboard, tape, wire, string, and rubber bands. These items will not be provided to you, and each team is responsible for bringing those supplies they will use. Groups must indicate the use of these items during check-in.
7. Judging will begin at 5:00 p.m. and all results will be submitted at 5:30 p.m.
8. Following the event, groups must also assist in packing up items and delivering them to the Kiah Duggins Shocker Support Locker.

Requirements

1. All participants must wear close toed shoes.
2. All participants must be present at the scheduled time of competition

• Certificates are awarded based on competition categories
• Spirit Competition Teams who place will receive points as noted below

Who can compete | Recognized Student Organizations, Spirit Competition Teams

General Information

1. Any group registered for the Spirit Competition or Recognized Student Organization is eligible to win.
2. Individuals may only represent a Spirit Team or RSO, they can not sign in for both. Individuals who sign in for both will be disqualified and removed from the competition.
3. Individuals who check-in must be listed on their Spirit Team Roster or have membership on the RSO groups ShockerSync Page.
4. The winning group will receive a $300 award towards their student group.

Enter to Win

1. Members of student organizations check-in at Koch Arena from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
2. Student groups receive an entry in the drawing for every 5 members who sign-in.
3. Winners announced at Shocker Madness

Registration is not required for this event. Individuals will check-in on-site.

Individuals, groups, departments, and community are welcome to enter the Shocktoberfest Parade. Accepted entries include but are not limited to walking units, dance teams, decorated cars, carts, and floats.

Three $500 awards will be given to entries that meet the following judging standards

• Originality and Creativity
• General Appearance
  Showmanship:
• Entertaining and Engaging
• Craftsmanship, if applicable
• Representation of group,
  organization, business

• Serves as a liaison between the Traditions Committee and members of the team they represent.
• Communicates to their team all rules, policies and updates concerning changes in schedules.
• Ensures all event or competition fees are paid on behalf of the team.
• Obtains any waivers, forms or documentation needed for an event.
• The Captain will be the point of contact in the event of an incident, infraction and/or breach of the student code of conduct made by one or the whole of the team.

The Captain of Spirit Competition team will need to download the SHOCKTOBERFEST TEAM ROSTER file which must be completed and submitted to the Traditions Chairperson. The Traditions Chairperson will reach out once the Team Registration deadline has passed.

Only individuals listed on the team’s official ROSTER will be permitted to participate in events, including participation events, if the group is competing in the Spirit Competition.

Individuals may only serve on and or represent one competing team and are not permitted on multiple rosters.

Participation points are earned through events and competitions. This section explains how points are calculated for events where attendance is required.

A check-in table will be at each event where participation points are earned. We will use the official roster and the individual must sign-in with their WSU ID. The ID on the card much match the name and id provided on the official roster.

Competitions

Groups who compete but do not place in an individual event are still eligible for points towards the Spirit Competition.

Example: 6 teams compete in a dodgeball tournament. Only 4 of the 6 are participating in the Spirit Competition. The Spirit Competition Teams are ranked separately based on their performance in the overall event.
