Managing Student Behavior in Academic Settings
BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS...
Establish high and positive behavioral expectations. Provide specific ideas on how everyone can contribute (“sharing the time for discussion”), and specific responses to address those who do not meet these expectations.
IF A DISRUPTION OCCURS...
Ask the student to change their behavior. Set specific boundaries, like stop swearing, raising your voice, etc. In the rare event such behavior becomes a pattern, document the situation internally for future reference. An effective way to do this is an email to the student following the incident.
IF A STUDENT FAILS TO COMPLY...
Outline next steps and document the disruption. If you remove a student, document
that through your
department chair, dean, and/or Student Conduct. You can submit an incident report
to Student Conduct at wichita.edu/reportit
