First Year Success Program

ACE Engineering is a first year success program for freshman engineering majors that equips you with the skills, resources, and support to ace your first year at Wichita State. This unique opportunity is open to incoming freshmen who desire to accelerate their success, create their future, and engage in their college community.

Membership Requirements

ACE Engineering doesn't have strict membership requirements that make it difficult to join. More than anything else, we seek students who have a strong desire to be successful, and simply want some additional guidance, resources, or support along the way. If you can meet these four easy membership requirements, we encourage you to apply!

  • Must be a freshman engineering major in Fall 2018.
  • Commitment to the program for the 2018-2019 year.
  • Participation in the Success Series monthly sessions and other ACE Engineering events.*
  • Monthly one-on-one meetings with your ACE Engineering Coach (an upperclass engineering student) and/or Engineering Student Success Center staff.

*For the Fall 2018 semester, the Success Series sessions are scheduled for September 5, October 24, and November 14 from 8:00pm - 9:30pm. There will also be a kick-off party on Wednesday, August 29 at 8:00pm where members will get to meet each other and their coaches. Other important dates and program details will be shared once students have been selected for membership.

Selection Timeline

  • Submit your application below by Sunday, August 5.
  • You will receive notification of your membership status by Friday, August 10.
  • If you are selected for membership, we will pair you with an ACE Engineering Coach. We will do our best to pair you with a coach in your major who shares a similar background and interests based on your application information.
  • Your coach will contact you prior to the start of fall classes to introduce him/herself.
  • All ACE Engineering members and coaches will attend a kick-off party on August 29.

Prizes for Points

As a member of the ACE Engineering program, you can collect points that earn you small prizes each month, and a chance to win larger prizes each month and a grand prize at the end of the fall semester. Earn points by taking advantage of the resources and events listed below. Some of the opportunities to earn points are one-time events, while others are ongoing and can earn you points each month. Earn at least 10 points per month, and you will get a small prize and be entered into a drawing for a larger prize for that month. Earn at least 40 points for the whole semester, and you will be entered into a drawing for one of five book scholarships for the spring semester. Listed below are all of the Fall 2018 opportunities you have to earn points. All you have to do is participate in these opportunities, and we will track your points for you! 


Each of the opportunities below can be done one time during the semester to earn points.

Meeting with Jacob or Jason

Have a one-on-one meeting with Jacob Mendez or Jason Bosch at some point in the fall semester. This meeting will provide an opportunity for you and Jacob/Jason to get to know each other better, to discuss your goals and strategies for suceess, and to help you work through any challenges you may be facing.

Advising Appointment with Lori Evans (OneStop)

Lori is your OneStop advisior. You will have an advising appointment with Lori in mid fall to discuss your spring schedule and enroll in spring classes. Attend your advising appointment with Lori, and earn two points!

Set Up Handshake Account

Handshake is the platform the Career Development Center uses for job and internship applications. This will be a valuable resource for you to find on-campus jobs, off-campus, jobs, and internships/co-ops. Earn a point by activating your account at any point during fall semester. Student Money Mangagement Meeting

The Office of Student Money Management (OSSM) assists students with personal money management, including things like developing a budget or creating a funding plan for college. Earn two points by setting up and attending an appointment with OSSM sometime in the fall semester. Click here to learn more and to schedule an appointment.

Office of Student Success Syllabus Party

Attend the Syllabus Party hosted by the Office of Student Success. The Syllabus Party is Tuesday, August 28 from 11:00am - 1:00pm in RSC 142. Bring copies of all of your course syllabi with you! Get free planner goodies and organize class projects, papers and exams. Success Coaches will be available to give time management strategies and organizational tips. Students can bring their own planners or phone calendars.

Complete 2019-2020 FAFSA

The FAFSA is necessary for you to be eligible for both federal financial aid and for need-based engineering scholarships. The 2019-2020 FAFSA application opens on October 1. Complete your FAFSA by the end of the fall semester and earn two points. To apply, visit

Complete General Engineering Scholarship Application

The General Engineering Scholarship Application (GESA) is a master application used to award nearly all College of Engineering scholarships. To receive priority consideration for 2019-2020 engineering scholarships, you must complete a GESA. The GESA will open on November 1 and close on February 1. Complete your GESA sometime between November 1 and the end of the fall semester, and you can earn two points. Click here for more information and to access the application.

Each of the opportunities below can be done multiple times per semester to earn points.

GEEKS Tutoring Sessions (earn up to 10 points)

Visit the GEEKS Tutoring Center and have a tutoring session with one or more of your fall classes. You earn one point for each tutoring session, and you can earn up to 10 points throughout the semester by attending at least 10 tutoring sessions. GEEKS is open for drop-in tutoring (no appointment needed!) Monday through Thursday from 8:00am - 7:00pm and Friday from 8:00am - 5:00pm, and is located in room A132 in the brand new Partnership 2 building located next to Airbus and the Experiential Engineering Building. Success Series Workshops (3 per semester)

Attend the Success Series workshops that are part of the ACE Engineering program, and earn three points for each workshop.

Campus Connections Events (3 per semester)

The College of Engineering will host three Campus Connections events throughout the fall semester. Earn two points for each event you attend. Events will be on September 26, October 31, and November 28. Times, locations, and event details will be shared as the dates get closer!

ACE Coach Meetings (once per month)

As part of the ACE Engineering program, you will meet one-on-one with your ACE coach at least once per month. Earn one point each month for meeting with your coach.
