July 2025 Insights:
The summer semester has come to a close, and the CARE Team is preparing to welcome students back for Fall 2025. Reflecting on the concerns students faced during the summer helps us anticipate potential trends and ensure we’re ready to provide the support they need as the new academic year begins.
Overview of Reports and Concerns
In July, CARE Team referrals continued to reflect the evolving needs of our campus
community. Thirty students were referred to the CARE Team—a 42% increase compared
to July 2024. This significant rise highlights the growing demand for student support
services during the summer months.
Along with the increase in referrals, we observed a trend in the types of concerns reported. During the summer, students are more likely to experience barriers to meeting basic needs and family-related challenges, including parenting responsibilities.
The top three concerns reported in July were:
- Students experiencing distress
- Lack of access to basic needs (food insecurity and housing instability)
- Family concerns
These concerns mirror those reported in June, reinforcing the trend that basic needs remain a critical barrier to student success during the summer months.
CARE Team Response
CARE Team case managers worked diligently to connect students with campus and community resources.
- Top Community Referral: United Way, which provided housing and shelter options and identified nearby food resources.
- Case managers assessed students holistically, addressing underlying factors such as financial challenges, employment needs, and other circumstances beyond their control.
- Of the 30 students referred in July, 6 declined in-person meetings and were supported via phone or email with resource information.
Looking Ahead
As we approach the fall semester, the CARE Team is prepared to address ongoing housing and food needs while supporting students through challenges related to belonging, homesickness, and adjusting to college life. Our goal remains clear: to remove barriers and promote student success through coordinated care and proactive outreach.
