Frequently Asked Questions/Issues:

Having some trouble with Panopto? Please review the Frequently Asked Question topic below and use the expansion option for troubleshooting tips.

I went to the website to download the recorder, but it would not allow me to log in.

There are two potential reasons for this to occur.

First, you have not yet configured a course for Panopto and therefore Panopto hasn't established you as a user yet. Configure your course and try to login using the steps provided.

Second, when you are trying to sign in, you are using the "Panopto" option in the dropdown box instead of using "Blackboard". Because Panopto is using your WSU credentials, you need to select the Blackboard option to sign-in. The step-by-step process is provided for clarity.

  1. Go to wichita.hosted.panopto.com
  2. When prompted to Sign in, choose Blackboard from the dropdown menu.
  3. This should redirect to a Blackboard sign in page.
  4. Enter WSU ID into the username field and current WSU password into the password field.
  5. Choose Login/click Enter on keyboard
  6. You should now be logged into Panopto
  7. If you are using these same steps and getting an error, please email OIR@wichita.edu
I don't have the option to download Panopto. Why not?

In order to have access to download the Panopto Recorder, you need to have "Creator" rights in the Panopto system. This is established through configuration. Configuring a Blackboard course for use of Panopto triggers four key effects in Panopto.

  1. Provides the instructor(s) of that course with Creator access in Panopto.
  2. Provides the instructor(s) the status to download the Panopto recorder to their device and create videos.
  3. Creates a course-specific folder where videos can be automatically uploaded once recorded.
  4. Provides the students of that course with access/permissions to view all videos placed in the course folder.
I tried to add captions, but it says "No captioning services are enabled or you do not have permission to request captions. Please contact your site administrator."
  • This error appears when using the "Upload or Request Captions" option instead of using the "Import Automatic Captions" option. If your video was just created or just edited, the Panopto system may not have finished processing or had enough time for the captioning software to perform its speech recognition. If this is your experience, please wait and try again in a few hours. For longer videos (over an hour long), you may need to wait until the next day to try again.
  • If you are still not getting the "Import Automatic Captions" options and there have been no changes made to your video for at least  hours, your video may have experienced a small error during processing and the option didn't pop up. In this case, try re-processing the video.
    1. Open the video settings.
    2. On the left-side of the settings window, go to "Manage".
    3. Scroll towards the bottom.
    4. Under "Processing Management" select the "Re-process" option. The video will re-process which will make it unavailable until it is completed. Once this is finished--again you may need to give it an hour or more depending on the size of the video--the "Import Automatic Captions" option should be available.
My video is playing the audio, but my students say the slides are not showing up.

Most of the time this is because the output of the video is set to "primary only" or "secondary only". You will need change this in the Output settings for all videos that experience this issue.

  1. Go to the video experiencing this issue
  2. Select the settings icon (looks like a cogwheel or flower) in the upper right-hand corner
  3. Choose the Outputs tab
  4. Under the Video Podcast section, you should see a dropdown menu for "Type". It is most likely set to "Primary Video Only" or "Secondary Video Only"
  5. Use the dropdown and select "Picture in Picture" or "Secondary Video Only" if you used PowerPoint as your Secondary video source.
  6. You will need to "Apply" the changes once you have selected the option you want to use.
  7. This will cause the video to re-process which will take some time. Please be patient.
I am concerned that my video is available for everyone to see! How can I fix it? (Single video)

In most cases, videos are not set as open/public to everyone to see. If you are concerned because you are seeing your videos listed in the "Everything" or "Home" areas, you may be seeing them because you are the creator and have access to them.

The videos listed in the "Everything" and "Home" sections are videos that you have access to view. Some users have made their videos available to anyone in the organization, which is why you see other users’ videos in those areas. However, yours being there does not necessarily mean they are available to everyone else. If you are concerned that your videos are available to everyone in the institution or have been made “public”, you can check the individual video settings to ensure that is not the case.

  1. When you see your video, click on its title to open it.
  2. Once it is open, in the upper right-hand corner, there should be a cogwheel icon which is the setting button. Click it to open the video settings.
  3. Next, in the window that opens, there is a menu of tabs that appear to the left. The second option down from the top should be Share. Click the tab and the share settings page will open.
  4. Under the “Who has access” area, you should see that the video is set to “Specific People: Only specific users and groups can view”.
  5. If this is not the setting that is listed, and you want to change that, click on the setting that is listed and a dropdown menu will appear.
  6. From there you can list the video as “Specific People” or “Anyone with a link”. This will restrict the video to being only available to those that either have the link provided to them or those that you have configured to have access using Blackboard.
  7. You may still see your video listed in the "Everything" or "Home" area since you have access to them, but this does not mean everyone else can see them.
I am concerned that all my videos are available to everyone to see! How can I fix it? (Folder level)

You can also check, and change, the "Who has access" setting--mentioned in the "I am concerned that my videos are available to everyone to see! How can I fix it? (Individual video)" topic--at the folder level.

  1. Use the Browse tab in the left-side menu.
  2. In the panel that opens, select the My Folders tab. This is not the same as the "My Folder" area in Panopto, so be sure to use the Browse tab and navigate to the "My Folders" tab to get to the right place.
  3. You should be presented with a list of Panopto folders that you have access to.
  4. Select the folder that holds the videos you are concerned about.
  5. Once it is open, in the upper right-hand corner, there should be a cogwheel icon which is the setting button. Click it to open the folder settings.
  6. Next, in the window that opens, there is a menu of tabs that appear to the left. The second option down from the top should be Share. Click the tab and the share settings page will open.
  7. Under the “Who has access” area, you should see that the folder is set to “Specific People: Only specific users and groups can view”.
  8. If this is not the setting that is listed, and you want to change that, click on the setting that is listed and a dropdown menu will appear.
  9. From there you can list the folder as “Specific People” or “Anyone with a link”. This will restrict videos in the folder to being only available to those that either have the link provided to them or those that you have configured to have access using Blackboard.
My video isn't in the right folder.

If you accidentally uploaded a video to the wrong folder, you can use the steps provided to move a video into the correct folder.

  1. Go to wichita.hosted.panopto.com and login.
  2. Next, go to the folder that currently holds the video you would like to move.
  3. If you hover over the video, in the upper left-hand corner of the video thumbnail image, a “selection box” should appear.
  4. Click the selection box to select the individual video and a list of additional options should appear in the tools ribbon under the folder name.
  5. Select the Move button from the list and the Move Session(s) to window will open.
  6. Use the dropdown box at the top of the page to select the folder you would like your video to be moved to.
  7. Next, select the final “Move” button to confirm your actions.
  8. The process will begin and the progress bar that appears will indicate when it is complete.
Why do I keep getting emails saying that I need to grant access for each student to watch my videos?

If you are receiving emails indicating that a student has requested access to view a video and you need to grant them permission, this stems from improper configuration. The video the student is attempting to view is not listed in a folder that their course has permission to access. Permissions/access is part of the configuration process.

If your videos are located in a folder that is not the current course's folder, you will need to re-configure your course to include permissions to access the folder where your video(s) are "housed".

I'm having issues configuring Panopto in my course while using a Mac computer.

This is typically a Third-Party Cookie issue. To fix this you will need to enable Third-Party Cookies in your browser. How you do this depends on which browser you are using.

Panopto has clear instructions for fixing this issue for each browser you might be using. You can find this resource on the Panopto Troubleshooting Page.
