When we say interdisciplinary, we mean it. Our students come from various disciplines with different strengths and weaknesses—but all have a passion for creativity, collaboration and having fun. We help support a rich campus innovation culture, connecting students and campus organizations with resources and serving as a place for the community to gather and exchange ideas.

The Master of Innovation Design (MID) degree program merges arts, science and technology courses, creating opportunities for student/faculty collaboration across WSU’s colleges. The program is tailored for each student, helping them develop their “design thinking skills” including their ability to:

  • Develop creative solutions
  • Communicate effectively
  • Practice entrepreneurship
  • Develop prototypes

The undergraduate leadership certificate comprises 12 credit hours of courses chosen from across many disciplines.

Upon completion of the leadership certificate, students are able to:

  1. Identify leadership theories and concepts;
  2. Differentiate leadership practices across settings, organizations, disciplines and systems;
  3. Identify cultural strengths and differences through a leadership framework;
  4. Develop leadership skills based on personal strengths and professional interests; and
  5. Lead individuals in teamwork exercises.

Elevated Understanding

By the end of their two years in the program, those who complete the journey will have an elevated understanding of leadership, collaboration, and the intricacies of ideation, gaining a highly marketable creative confidence, and lifelong friends in the process.

Jared Goering and Spencer Steinert

Student duo seeks to educate with futuristic technology

WSU students Jared Goering and Spencer Steinert have been thinking of ways to improve the education system since they were 14 years old.

With help from the Institute for Interdisciplinary Innovation, the two began developing their ideas into Dino, a wearable device that Steinert describes as a combination of Legos and an Apple watch. Kids would build their own Dino, teaching them basic electrical engineering and coding skills through augmented reality and computer games.

The duo joined with a biomedical engineering student Ryan Becker on a design for integrated biofeedback exercise clothing to win this year's student John A. See Award for innovative research.
